I meant to do this a long time ago (and in fact, I thought I already had), but it's only been done now.
I've finally ditched PHP4, which is being officially ended at the end of this year.
I was having difficulty getting any PHP-related pages showing earlier... ...because due to a modification I made, both versions were trying to run
Oh well. Let me know if you see any odd problems with the site.

Windows' limited mass-rename support

I found out that Windows' command-line does have some limited mass-renaming support.
The problem is, it replaces the amount of characters you've specified. See the examples below:

C:\test>touch s_moo s_cow s_foo s_bar

C:\test>ls
s_bar  s_cow  s_foo  s_moo

C:\test>ren * m_*

C:\test>ls
m_bar  m_cow  m_foo  m_moo

C:\test>rm *

C:\test>touch moo cow foo bar

C:\test>ls
bar  cow  foo  moo

C:\test>ren * s_*
A duplicate file name exists, or the file
cannot be found.

C:\test>ls
moo  s_o  s_r  s_w

robots.txt is more than Disallow

It's interesting - I always thought that the search engine control/rules file, robots.txt, only allowed for User-Agent and Disallow lines - most sites and checkers seem to follow this impression.
Oddly enough, that's false. Since circa 1996, the Standard for Robot Exclusion has not only added Allow, but also has support for extensions of the standard, such as the sitemap line. I'm not sure what engines support that one, though...

Psyc?

I've been considering implementing a psyc server here and I've been hesitant about it. It looks like a great piece of software - supporting IRC, Jabber, and a few others all at once - and it would be nice to use a central server for managing several things. If I can include some kind of blog software with it, it'd be perfect - everyone who registers here would be able to chat, blog, and (maybe) mail, without having to register multiple times.
Read the intro and features, Looks pretty cool, eh? But is it worth the time and effort?
I guess I'd need to get more people here first, mm? Or maybe it's the other way around...

Heh... yeah, there was a nasty amount of spam on this forum as I was letting guest posting - still am.
This forum doesn't get enough attention from spammers to warrant a real anti-spam solution yet (like akismet) and the akismet mod for this forum is a little lacking at the moment.
So instead, I added one little non-standard checkbox, and all is well. Logged-in members will not see it - you've already passed a test on the way - but guests will see it and must check it to be able to post.
