Eating out, Thanksgiving, and Wikis

I don't seem to blog often anymore. It kind of bothers me, because it usually causes me to forget things, or put stuff in "blocks" (or updates), like this. Then again, I've also been ignoring my todo list... I suppose it's because I'm still getting used to my job. Yes, I know that I don't have to get up that early (I have flexible hours, apparently, but I don't put too much faith in those words.), but while the sleepiness is a little difficult to deal with, there are some perks to getting up early. Not to mention that half the time, the cat wakes me up anyway...

After the second day of work - that is, on the 3rd - I went to The Fox And Feather Pub along with my brother and some of his friends (and his boyfriend). The menu was a little bland, but I went for the shrimp linguine - finding out then what the name of "that sauce I kinda don't like" was - which wasn't too bad. Were it not for the sauce, I probably would have enjoyed it much more - the shrimp and pasta were good, so perhaps I'll go for something else next time or ask if I can get another sauce instead. The night went well and I enjoyed myself, but I think it would have been better if my brother hadn't decided to schedule this on a Tuesday on the second day of work; I really don't understand why he decided to make it that day. Perhaps to celebrate me getting a job, but I really want to avoid being late at my job... I did it too much at my last one and I don't want a repeat performance. I know I can do better than that. The reason I mention all this is because after finishing our meals there, most of them decided they'd go to another pub (or was it a bar?), and I decided I'd go back home (given the time left, I didn't have much of a choice if I wanted to get up early).

Thanksgiving was... interesting. First, I thought that we were going to my sister's new apartment for a dual purpose: For Thanksgiving, naturally, and also to help her move. So, I packed fairly minimally - clothes, a few board games, a this or a that here and there - since I figured that I'd spend most of that weekend helping her move. Turns out that her friends had already helped her move, and that everything she had was out of the old apartment. Well. Have lots of spare time then, don't we? It wasn't so bad, though; I had the sense to bring myself a book, and I also brought my portable media player, and when I wasn't the only one with nothing to do there was the games - I had brought Calypso (didn't get played), Tsuro (played several rounds), Escape Velocity: Nova (didn't get played, but then again, there wasn't a point where only me and my brother weren't doing anything), and Skip-Bo (which, being my mother's favorite, got played quite a bit). We enjoyed ourselves, had fun, yaddi yaddi yadda. Oh, and because Rona was having a sale during that weekend (or at least that Rona did), my brother decided to buy his bathroom tiles at that point. Heh.
The way back, however, is another story.

It appears G2 doesn't handle it's database being set back all that well.

I think... we're back... (Or: Recovering from a stupid mistake.)

Posted by Keilaron on Sunday, August 13. 2006 in Server

Some of you may've noticed (though only Mereo asked me about it) that my site suddenly, mysteriously vanished.

The short version is this: I accidentally deleted the database. Last backup was months ago. (Needless to say, flexbackup has been added to various cronjobs.)

The long (and technical) version...

So much for that bright idea...

Posted by Keilaron on Tuesday, March 7. 2006 in Server

So, I was planning on running Apache exclusively under it's own user, that way it wouldn't run under root.
Problem: Ports under 1024 are only allowed access by root. HTTP (Web) is port 80.
So, to work around this problem I told Apache to listen on port 8080, and made the router forward port 80 to port 8080, making this change completely transparent to visitors.
Or so I thought.
If there are any redirections that occur, Apache redirects using port 8080 -- that is, the address the visitor would get isn't http://keilaron.kicks-ass.org/, but instead http://keilaron.kicks-ass.org:8080/, which doesn't work since it isn't forwarded. And it'd look ugly, even if I did forward it.

Ugh. I need to get the new server up and running sooner. Hopefully Apache2 on the new machine will behave better. It may be a Dell, but... well, if it's running Linux, who cares?

As a side note, I've added a link to JumpinJim Productions, which I'm going to help on remaking his site, and adding a contact form.

Another day, another upgrade...

Posted by Keilaron on Friday, November 25. 2005 in Personal, Server

Once again, my blog's been upgraded. 9.0 -> 9.1, so it's nothing much; Most of the fixed bugs didn't apply to this installation.
Unfortunately, it seems to have caused the calendar to display improperly for FireFox users. Sorry about that. If the horizontal scrollbar bothers you, just hide the calendar by clicking on the -.

As for access issues... they continue, but they seem to be more erratic than consistent, which is nice, but not optimal. Honestly, I think I'm going to switch to DSL because of this; Unfortunately, Sympatico is not an option, and I'd have to provider my mother with one hell of a good reason if I want this change to happen.
Not likely.

I while ago, I went to see a Just For Laughs performance live. It wasn't too bad; in fact it was fairly good. But I draw the line there, as the "stupid humour" infection has managed to spread it's poison here as well. Some of the Just For Laughs comedians need to clean up a little.
The opening show / warm-up act done by the "New York Street Boys / Lipton Laugh Trackers" was nice. They did their job well as a warm-up act, and without speaking a single word (if I remember correctly).
Shaun Majumder (Canadian) really doesn't strike me as brillant... especially since his main joke was on a kid in the audience who had just reached puberty - and thus Shaun had nicknamed him "Pubes". Guess what? Some of the comedians also greeted him that way. It was fairly lame, in my opinion. Then again, Shaun never really impressed me: the "Back stage pass with Shaun Majumder" skits during the usual Just For Laughs T.V. episodes were really horrible.
Scott Faulconbridge (Canadian) was fairly good; He did pick on pubes in his opening, but he was the first one on stage, so I suppose he was trying to humour the host (Shaun). Or maybe just using a joke that worked, since (I have to admit) part of the audience did enjoy it. Anyhow, he was a pretty good "start", so I'd place him second best.
Next up was, if I recall correctly, was Ryan Belleville (Canadian). He wasn't all that good, perhaps because I simply didn't like his type of humour, or perhaps because he kept going on the same joke (That beavers supposedly chew off their own testicles as a method of defense.). Next.
Rocky Laporte (USian), who I believe was italian, was a little better than Ryan. He also re-used jokes, but didn't just keep going on the same one; He also is able to go off on a tangent, return from it and keep it funny, which is admirable. I'd class him as third best.
The only black man in the performance (And my mother would also point out there were no females 9.9), Rod "Rodman" Thompson (USian) did okay. I wasn't able to follow very well due to the accent; I've never been very good with that type of accent for some reason =/
Finally, but definitely not least (It's a good thing they placed him last!), was Carl Barron (Australian). Thankfully, I've had some prior experience with the australian accent, so I had no trouble following (Can't say the same for my mother. I feel she missed the best comedian of the set!). He was probably the most original comedian that night, as well as the most applauded. My sides hurt I was laughing so hard. ^_^;
Well, that pretty much wraps it up on that...

I'm finally getting some interview proposals. I have one tomorrow, in fact, and may have another in the near future. Wish I knew what makes me so... uninteresting. =/ I hope I do well on the data-entry job, because it sounds like something I could do excellently - there's nothing like a job you can do without a problem. (I'm not saying I don't want to have to learn, but there's something appealing about not having the fear of going "Oh, I have no idea how to do that.".)

Notes to self: plug-ins, template, colors, users/groups, validity check!.
